The Lawrence A. Rubin Conference Room was dedicated today by the members of the Mackinac Bridge Authority board at their official meeting held in St. Ignace. The Authority dedicated the conference room in recognition of Lawrence A. Rubin for his outstanding service to the State of Michigan and the Mackinac Bridge Authority.
Mr. Rubin was appointed Executive Secretary of the Mackinac Bridge Authority on June 24, 1950. He was a key figure in the financing and construction of the Mackinac Bridge. As Executive Secretary he supervised the operation and maintenance of the Mackinac Bridge from its opening on November 1, 1957, until his retirement on December 31, 1982.
Mr. Rubin was Executive Director of the Michigan Good Roads Federation from 1947 to 1952, where he helped develop a landmark highway needs study that led to passage of Michigan’s basic highway law, Act 51 of 1951. In 1964 he was elected president of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association and served a one year term.
From 1954 to 1960, Mr. Rubin also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the International Bridge Authority where he was instrumental in obtaining legislation and financing for the bridge that connects Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.
In a highway and bridge career spanning more than sixty-two years, Lawrence A. Rubin is a respected member of the transportation industry. Mr. Rubin was inducted into the Michigan Transportation Hall of Honor in 1988. His enthusiasm, dedication and devotion to the Mackinac Bridge are an inspiration to everyone in the Mackinac Bridge family.
Mr. Rubin and his wife, Elma, were present for the dedication ceremony. Larry’s son, David, M.A. University of Michigan, is now a senior at New York Law School and Editor-in-Chief of Law Review.
