The Mackinac Bridge Authority counts the number of deer taken south across the Mackinac Bridge during Michigan’s firearm deer season. The toll collectors count bucks and does.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources requests this information each year to provide an index of the size of the Upper Peninsula deer herd and success of the firearm deer season. The Mackinac Bridge Authority counted the deer from opening day through December 2, 2001.
The final deer count for the year 2001 firearm deer season is 8,073 deer. This compares to last year’s count of 14,460 deer.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources used the bridge view area west of the toll plaza as a deer check station. The station operated from Friday, November 16, 2001 through Monday, November 19, 2001. During the four days of operation, the MDNR checked 736 deer.
