Mackinac Bridge Authority reminds motorists tolls go up March 1
February 27, 2008 — The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) today issued a reminder to motorists planning to cross the 50-year-old bridge that tolls will increase slightly next month. After a series of public hearings held in December 2007, the MBA board unanimously approved incremental toll adjustments. These adjustments will help fund a long-term maintenance and preservation program that includes a complete deck-replacement project within the next decade.
The following toll rates (per crossing) will go into effect Saturday, March 1, 2008:
Auto/passenger vehicle – $3; vehicle with trailer $1.50 per axle
Commuter – $1.60
Motor home – $3.50 per axle
Truck – $3.50 per axle
NOTE: Beginning in 2009 (and subsequent years), toll increases will take effect on Jan. 1.
In 2009, commuter tolls will increase 10 cents per year through 2014. Passenger vehicle tolls will increase to $3.50 in 2010, $4 in 2012, and $4.50 in 2014. A passenger vehicle with trailer toll will be $1.75 per axle in 2010, $2 in 2012, and $2.25 in 2014. Motor home and truck tolls will increase to $4.50 per axle in 2010, $5 in 2012, and $6 in 2014.
At its December 2007 meeting, the MBA board also decided to review financial forecast data in 2013 to determine future actions, such as a toll increase listed in 2014, modification of tolls, and/or bonding. Toll rates at the Mackinac Bridge were last adjusted in 2003. The 50-year-old bridge is maintained and operated exclusively with toll revenue.
