Mackinac Bridge to reduce annual energy costs by 11 percent with green initiative

The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA), in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), today announced a new initiative that will reduce annual energy costs at the bridge by approximately $13,000 or 11 percent. The green initiative involves powering down computers at night and on weekends, shutting off decorative lights on the bridge at 1 a.m. and reducing wattage at the toll plaza, and researching other efficiency options for LED (light-emitting diode) technology. This money-saving measure will go into effect immediately.

“We want to make sure the users of our bridge understand we are tightening the belt everywhere we can,” said MBA Board Chairman William H. Gnodtke. “Michigan’s landmark is here to stay and we will continue to preserve it in the most efficient way possible.”

The Mackinac Bridge will be in an energy-conservation mode until further notice and will continue to ensure safe and secure crossings for all bridge users.
