Mackinac Bridge Authority board approves new commuter policy effective Jan. 1, 2010

At its regular meeting earlier today, the Mackinac Bridge Authority board adopted a new commuter policy that will go into effect next year.

After reviewing extensive public feedback on two proposals with a 24-hour rule, the board ultimately decided on its first proposal, but with modifications. The new policy defines a commuter as a motorist that makes a return trip within a 36-hour window. New commuter rates will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2010, and will total $3.60 ($3.50 initially to cross the bridge and only $.10 on the return trip) if the 36-hour time frame is met.

Also, the board decided to extend the expiration date for current commuter customers by another year. Those cards are now valid until Dec. 31, 2010.
