Off with the old, on with the new – Bridge projects to keep Mackinac Bridge in top shape
Work this summer on an iconic National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark is all part of a long-term preservation strategy designed to extend the life of the 53-year old Mackinac Bridge. Crews will be painting, repairing, and replacing some of the open grating during the 2011 construction season, in an effort to further protect the bridge from the elements like weather and time itself.
Motorists should expect lane closures on the bridge this season and are reminded to drive with extreme caution in the work zones.
“We want people to appreciate what we are doing to preserve the bridge and to enjoy the scenic view a little more this year as they safely cross the Straits of Mackinac,” said Mackinac Bridge Authority Executive Secretary Bob Sweeney.
Work crews will remove the old paint and replace it with a primer, to prevent corrosion, and two top coats, to help it be more resistant to ultraviolet light emitted by the sun. Other work involves removal and replacement of the original grating, miscellaneous repairs, and spot painting in various places on the bridge.
