Lane Restrictions from May 1 through May 18
Lane Restrictions from May 1 through May 18
Beginning May 1st, the Mackinac Bridge Authority will install large motorized work platforms under the bridge deck. To accomplish this work, the lanes that normally serve southbound traffic will be closed for the entire length of the bridge from May 1st through May 18th.
The two northbound lanes are striped to accommodate two-way traffic for the entire length of the bridge. This configuration is very similar to the way traffic is handled during the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk, with only one side of the bridge used for traffic and one lane dedicated to each direction of travel. For this reason, passing on the bridge will not be permitted. Please stay in single file and observe proper spacing between vehicles. We ask that you drive with extreme caution and, again, do not attempt to pass other vehicles when crossing the bridge.
As you travel across the bridge, especially during Friday and Sunday peak periods, you may experience delays. During weekdays, you may experience 10 to 20 minute delays, while on weekends you may experience delays of an hour or more during peak travel times. The Mackinac Bridge Authority and the Michigan State Police stand ready to respond to any problems to minimize these delays.
Special crossing times are provided for vehicles over 10 feet wide. These vehicles may cross Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. and in the evening between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. During these wide-load crossing times, you may experience delays of up to one hour.
As we proceed through this project, we will update this message to keep you informed of current project conditions. Please tune AM radio 530 or AM radio 1610 for project updates.
For the past forty-three years, the Mackinac Bridge has provided a safe and efficient passageway connecting Michigan’s two great peninsulas. To protect this vital linkage, the Bridge Authority must undertake these important projects.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Have a safe and pleasant crossing!
