Mackinac Bridge Authority hosts celebration Nov. 1, marking 50th anniversary of official bridge opening
The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) will host its 50th anniversary of the official bridge opening ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 1 at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace. The Park is located northwest of the toll booths. The 12:30 p.m. event includes two dedications, a congressional record presentation, and a drawing for a Mackinac Bridge tower tour.
“To date, our celebrations have been very memorable,” said MBA Executive Secretary Bob Sweeney. “On Nov. 1, we will recreate the historical ribbon-cutting ceremony which marked the day the bridge first opened to traffic.”
All vehicles that cross the bridge on Nov. 1 will receive a special 50th anniversary memento in celebration of the milestone. Two lucky winners will be randomly selected to receive a weekend vacation package in either St. Ignace or Mackinaw City.
Special 50th anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase at the Bridge View Park event, including: uncirculated tokens, 50th anniversary t-shirts, “Our Bridge at 50” Special DVDs, a special issue of the Michigan History Magazine featuring the Mackinac Bridge, and various Mackinac Bridge books authored by former MBA Executive Secretary Larry Rubin. Complimentary 50th cake also will be available.
Those still interested in registering for the tower tour, should visit the St. Ignace Area Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, or Welcome Center on or before Oct. 31, 2007.
