Why do we escort over-width, heavy and overlength vehicles across the Mackinac Bridge
The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) requires escorts of these vehicles to ensure the safety of all motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge. Over-width and overlength vehicles require an escort to alert other motorists and to ensure adequate traffic separation of both northbound and southbound auto and commercial traffic. Heavy load trucks are required to maintain 500-foot spacing and are not allowed to pass while on the Mackinac Bridge. Escorts ensure these requirements are met, and weight is safely distributed to protect the structural integrity of the bridge.
